The J&R Swanberg Community Residence was formerly known as the Putnam Residence. The house was built in 1878 for George Putnam and his family. Mr. & Mrs. Putnam had seven children. George Putmam was a businessman that sold coal and hops throughout the local community, the Northeastern States and especially within New York State. The home represents an eclectic style of architecture dominated by a Victorian influence. The home is constructed of pressed brick imported from Belgium and etched glass panels imported from Venice, Italy. Original panels are still present in the doors of the home.

From 1950-1977, The Putnam House functioned as the Harding Nursing Home. In 1977, the home was purchased by Mr. & Mrs. Roger Swanberg and family who converted the home into the J&R Swanberg Community Residence, a congregate care level II home licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health. For the past twenty-five years, the J&R Swanberg Community Residence has provided residents with an opportunity to remain as independent as possible in a supportive, friendly atmosphere.
